On their own - Britain's child migrants

Marchmont Homes history books

open pages of a record book

Annie Macpherson established the Marchmont Home in Belleville, Ontario, in 1870 and appointed Ellen Bilbrough to manage it. Ellen brought children to Canada for various agencies, including Quarriers and Barnardo’s.

The home was taken over by The Manchester Homes, and then Liverpool Sheltering Homes in 1920. Barnardo’s took control in 1925 and closed it that August.

The history books contain records of all the children placed through Marchmont.

Lent by Barnardo’s.
