On their own - Britain's child migrants

front and back views of a medallion with a Liverpool crest

William received this award in 1910, for good attendance and good conduct during four years at Major Lester School in Liverpool. Medals were given out regularly to reward frequent attendance. Truancy was common as many children worked to support their families.

William kept the medallion all his life. Receiving it led to his selection for the scheme and was instrumental in his leaving Liverpool.

Lent by Mrs Phyllis Clark.
