On their own - Britain's child migrants

'SS Sarmatian'

painting of a ship

This painting features 'Sarmatian' leaving the Mersey on 14 November 1878. Among the passengers were the Marquess of Lorne and his wife Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s daughter. He was travelling to Canada to become Governor-General.

'Sarmatian' carried many child migrants from Liverpool to Canada and it is very likely that there was a group on board during this voyage.

Oil on canvas. Joseph Witham 1878. Lent by Merseyside Maritime Museum, National Museums Liverpool.
